If you want to practice some cupcake decorating skills, this is a good one to start with. All you need is an inexpensive pastry bag, some decorating tips, some homemade frosting and food coloring.
Start out by making a batch of cupcakes. Then some homemade vanilla frosting. Add a few drops of food coloring to make some gruesome green or bloody red icing. Fill the pastry bag (with the decorating tip that you want to try, already attached) with icing, and make a bunch of fat, brainy squiggles over one half of the cupcake. Now do the same thing on the other side. You really can't mess it up..... and if you do, eat the evidence!
Here's my favorite icing recipe:
Ingredients:
1/3 cup softened butter
2 tablespoons milk
3 cups powdered sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Equipment:
Mixing bowl
Mixing spoons
Electric mixer (optional)
Measuring cups and measuring spoons
Making The Icing:
1.In a mixing bowl, combine the softened butter with the powdered sugar.
2.Mix them together using a mixing spoon, or electric mixer set on low speed until they are well blended.
3.Next add the vanilla extract and one teaspoon of the milk and mix well.
4.Scrape the sides of the bowl often while mixing.
5.Continue to add milk one teaspoon at a time until frosting is the desired consistency.
6.Continue to blend until the icing is smooth and creamy, with no lumps.
7.Your vanilla icing is finished and ready to spread!
This vanilla frosting recipe makes enough icing for 24 cupcakes.
